Verse for Today - John 1:1-2,14 (click to read)

John 1:1-2, 14

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Read all of John 1

Last Wednesday we read these verses in our Catechism Class.  We were discussing the Second Article of the Christian Faith, what it means to believe Jesus Christ His only begotten Son.  The Second Person of the Trinity existed before He was born in Bethlehem that first Christmas night.  As He entered human history he took on a human body.  This is the meaning of verse 14 "and the Word became flesh."

The importance of today's verse is significant.  It teaches us both of the deity and the humanity of Christ.  Part of having faith in God and trusting in Christ for salvation, is being convinced of what the Bible teaches about who Jesus was.  That a man became God, we could not believe... but that God (who can do all things) could become man, that we can and must believe... if we would have true faith Christ (and thus have hope of being saved from our sins).

This same truth is taught in Colossians 2:9,10

"For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power."
